A Calgary homeless man reports an outbreak of COVID-19.

The Calgary Day Center said wednesday, five other people who stayed at its main shelter downtown tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Seventy-six rich countries have pledged to join a comprehensive COVID-19 vaccine allocation plan co-directed through the World Health Organization (WHO) to purchase and distribute vaccines equally, the joint project leader said Wednesday.

Seth Berkley, chief executive of GAVI Vaccine Alliance, said the plan, known as COVAX, has now signed Japan, Germany, Norway and more than 70 other countries, agreeing in advance to purchase COVID-19 vaccines at the facility for their populations.

“Lately we have 76 high- and middle-income countries that have submitted confirmations of their goal of participating, and we expect that number to increase,” Berkley told Reuters in an interview.

Calgary again led the province in active COVID-19 cases after a wave of new infections in recent days.

Alberta registered 114 new coronavirus instances on Wednesday, bringing the provincial number of active instances to 1,403, of which 632 are similar to Calgary and 538 to EdmontonArray, representing 45% and 38% of active instances, respectively.
