Tokyo on Thursday showed 8,529 new cases of COVID-19, more than double the number recorded the previous week for the third day in a row, as the country reports a resurgence of infections with an immediate buildup in recent days.
On Wednesday, new national bodies nearly doubled from last week to more than 45,000, surpassing the 40,000 mark for the first time since May 18.
