COVID-19 toll in Brazil exceeds 121,000

Brazil said on Monday that its death toll from COVID-19 had surpassed 121,000 deaths after the death of 553 more patients in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 121,381.

During the same 24-hour period, tests detected 45,961 new cases of infection, bringing the total number of cases to 3,908,272, to the Ministry of Health.

On a note, Brazil experienced its fifth consecutive day of fewer than 1000 deaths from the new coronavirus.

However, the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, in the southeast of the country, the maximum affected by the pandemic, surpassed on Monday 30,000 deaths by COVID-19, surpassing Spain in the number of deaths.

Also on Monday, Brazil’s Ministry of Fitness announced that he had appointed Lauricio Monteiro Cruz, who worked for the government in the capital Brasilia, as director of the Department of Immunizations and Communicable Diseases.

Brazil has the world’s largest outbreak in number of instances and deaths, after the United States.
