COVID-19: States call for 67.2 billion naira

Following the continued decline of its economic fortunes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, states have suggested to the federal government that it urgently release the fund of approximately 67.2 billion naira that it has promised to expand.

PTF’s presidential organization at COVID-19, headed by SGF Federation secretary of government Boss Mustapha, announced on Monday that 4 states, namely Lagos, Kano, Jigawa and Ogun, had won the funds.

However, speaking to reporters in Abuja, Cross River State Health Commissioner and interim president of the Nigerian Health Commissioners Forum, Dr. Betta Edu, said states are now financially overburdened and need to be bailed out.

She said the pandemic had a negative effect on state income, adding that many states can pay wages lightly and meet other monetary obligations, hence the desire to unlock funds.

She said: “There was a general blockade in every state. Most states can’t pay wages.Their internally generated revenue has declined. The federal government will have to release the 2.1 billion nairas promised to the states to help them fight this pandemic.”

“Only a few states have won something. I’m thinking lakes, Ogun, Kano and Jigawa. The others haven’t won the budget yet.States want that budget to help them fight the spread of the virus.”

“States may not have enough pattern collection kits. It’s like a marathon race and the states are already financially overburdened.States should be able to exercise others capable of collecting patterns in all local governments.States can set designated places where those patterns can be taken.

“We can’t communicate on both sides of our mouths. Go to the markets of each and every state.People live like the virus doesn’t exist. People don’t wear a mask and our lifestyle doesn’t inspire social estrangement at all.”

“We need to see more feds for states to create more resilient fitness formulas. We also need to see a formula in which we can have universal fitness coverage. There is no insurance plan in many states.”
