WHISTLER, British Columbia – The 2021 Luge World Championships will be held in Whistler, British Columbia, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The championship scheduled for February 5 and 7 has been cancelled through the International Luge Federation.
“Unfortunately, a successful finishing touch of this first occasion is not imaginable under the situations and regulations given,” Federation Executive Director Christoph Schweiger said Wednesday.
Fil’s Executive Board will be elsewhere in the coming weeks.
Canada’s 40-14-day requirement for others arriving from outside the country is the biggest impediment to the event, said Tim Farstad, Executive Director of the Canadian Luge Association.
“The biggest challenge we face right now is 40 14 days for all foreign athletes arriving in Canada, which we assure will rise until February,” Farstad said.
“As a result, the FIL informed us that it would not be imaginable to host the occasion this year.”
The Whistler Sliding Center is the site of the 2013 World Championship.
The 2021 event originally scheduled to be held on Calgary.La track is closed indefinitely, so the championship has moved to Whistler.
The loss of the luge championship follows the cancellations of the Speed Skating World Cup in Calgary and Montreal this year.
The men’s and women’s Alpine World Cup relegations in Lake Louise, Alberta, respectively, were canceled.
