Contrary to the hypothesis that Nigeria has begun to flatten the curve, Nigeria’s Disease Control Centre, NCDC, said Wednesday that the country had still reached that stage.
According to the latest update released through the NCDC, Nigeria recorded a decrease with a total of 30 four new instances shown as of August 4, 2020.
However, NCDC Director General Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, in a verbal exchange with Vanguard, said relief in new infections recently observed the result of minimization in the number of samples collected in all 36 states, adding the Federal Capital Territory, CTF.
He said it is too early for Nigerians to interpret the decline as a flattening of the curve and a fall in new cases does not mean the end of the pandemic.
He explained that; “We had a minimisation in the number of samples collected in the states between July 31 and August 2. This would possibly be related to the public holiday that has led to relief in activities across the country.”
“It is still too early to interpret a fall in new cases as a flattening of the curve. We are learning from countries in Europe and other parts of the world that a fall in new cases means the end of the pandemic.”
“In most of these countries, they are experiencing a backup of cases again. We are proud of the leadership of the Lagos state government in responding to this outbreak, but we will not backtrack on our reaction activities. Although the state of Lagos is the epicenter of the epidemic in Nigeria, states are at other stages of the epidemic. In some states, we’re seeing a buildup of cases.
“We are as strong as our weakest link and will continue with the momentum of response, despite the decrease in the number of new instances in Lagos.”
Continuing, Ihekweazu extra noted that the coronavirus pandemic had affected people’s lives, country economies, adding that the country now knew that the pandemic was a “marathon and not a sprint.”
He said Nigeria wanted to come up with methods that first ensure that other people were and that life continued. “This does not mean that the pandemic is over or that the virus is no longer with us. This means that we will all have to take on our day-to-day work by adhering to public fitness and fitness measures, as we resume business, school and business activities. Etc.
“It is vital to note that other people in the most vital situation deserve to be aware that they want to take additional precautions. People over the age of 60 or with an underlying illness deserve to be absolutely deterred from traveling or attending meetings. of a vaccine, the only way to restrict our threat is to take precautions: wear a mask in public, wash your hands with soap and running water, and stay 2 meters from the next person.
He argued that the fact that business and other activities can be resumed in stages does not mean that others are COVID-19.
“In the absence of a vaccine, the only way to restrict our threat is to take precautions: wear a mask in public, wash your hands with soap and running water, and stay 2 meters from the next person. That’s why the NCDC has published rules for businesses and devout centers.
“We have also worked with the Federal Department of Education to publish the rules for school activities. All of these parts are available in www.covid19.ncdc.gov.ng. It is our duty as members of society to abid by those rules. and stay safe.”
It also revealed that the NCDC is running with all states and laboratories to ensure that the country does not lose the achievements that have been achieved in the following month.
“We have expanded our laboratory capacity to 60 verification laboratories so that we can perceive the true load of COVID-19 in Nigeria. We are now focusing on making sure those labs are operating at their full capacity and, more importantly, that we are in states without COVID-19 control labs activate it in the next month,” he said.
