To address the shortage of COVID-19 data on young people from internally displaced persons, internally displaced persons, camps and hard-to-reach spaces where young people do not have access to television or social media, Raquel Daniel, founder, Beyond the Classroom Foundation, has published a pamphlet entitled “There is a new virus in the city.”
The pamphlet, designed for 6- to 10-year-olds who perceive the COVID-19 pandemic, Daniel told Vanguard, “will be distributed in IDP camps and remote locations.”
She said: “As a progress officer, my team and I from beyond the Classroom Foundation visited one of the IDP camps in Abuja to distribute food aid pieces in April 2020.
“There I met many young people who were concerned about the pandemic, but had no idea what was going on, when they would open schools and how they could help fight the virus.
“A few weeks later, I wrote the booklet to teach the youth about coronavirus and inspire them themselves and others.
“There is a new virus in the city that explains, in undeniable terms, what coronavirus is, how it spreads, why schools are closed, and what they (children) can do in their own ability to prevent its spread.
“The book, which can be purchased on our website, is full of engaging, colorful and fun photographs and also answers key questions in the language. It also explains how germs spread and what young people can do to stay safe.
“I hope the messages in the booklet will alleviate children’s fears by giving them the data they want to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.”
Daniel revealed that the proceeds from the sale of e-books will pass to Beyond the Classroom Foundation, a volunteer organization founded through it in 2011, to access youth education and reproductive education for women in Nigeria’s marginalized communities.
