The Nigerian Pediatrics Association (PAN) reduced the weight of the federal government’s (FG) restriction on the reopening of schools, that is, in fundamental education, saying the action “was worth the wait.”
Professor Edward Alikor, president of the PAN, at the Professional Corps post published at Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said an assessment of global trends in the fierce fight against the pandemic and negative reports between countries that have tried to reopen the school makes FG moderation a sensible choice.
PAN noted that “As an agreement that actively seeks the well-being of young people and ensures that their right to quality physical care is protected, we continue to close Nigerian schools and urge schools to remain closed until situations are safe.”
Minimal care for the reopening of schools in Nigeria is expected to be steady, with a steady decline in the spread of COVID-19 in maximum parts of the country. It is then and only then that other criteria established through the Guidelines for the reopening of schools and educational establishments after the closure of the Covid-19 pandemic can now be taken into account.
“We are surprised to see the absence of public fitness physicians, infectious disease experts and other fitness specialists for children and adolescents among stakeholders known to have been consulted to succeed in resolving to reopen schools in September 2020.”
“We urge that this error be corrected to allow resolution managers to succeed in an objective, balanced and independent resolution on a factor that affects the fitness of our young people. To a large extent, the safest position for young people right now is at home in the care of parents.
“Many parents now have to assume the additional duty to control and (in some cases) oversee children’s school work, responsibilities that have historically been shared with teachers and school administrators.
“The PAN encourages them and would like parents to see their sacrifices only as a duty to their families, but as a national duty in this time of war opposed to the coronavirus.”
