COVID-19: Kuwaiti government agencies suggested 2,000 stranded fishermen return home

Cairo: more than 2,000 fishermen are stranded outdoors in Kuwait due to restrictions on curbing the spread of coronavirus, a Kuwaiti industry trade unionist said today.

The stranded fishermen come from Egypt and India, kuwaiti Fishermen’s Federation President Zahir Al Suwayyan said in a statement.

Last month, Kuwait announced a passenger ban on 32 “high-risk” countries until they became accounted for orders from Kuwait’s fitness government due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The ban includes India, Pakistan, Egypt and the Philippines, which have expat communities in Kuwait.

“Fishing is perceived as a delicate vocation that requires a professional workforce, basically outside the country,” Al Suwayyan said.

He suggested that Kuwaiti government agencies allow stranded fishermen to return in accordance with physical fitness precautions.

“A delay in fishermen’s return will lead to a minimisation of fish production and availability, leading to higher prices,” he said.
