“COVID is now the third leading cause of death in the United States, ahead of accidents, injuries, lung disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and many causes,” Frieden said.
The CDC says the center’s disease and cancer are the first and fore reasons for death.
Coronavirus has caused more than 170,000 deaths in the United States and has killed more than 1,000 people a week over several weeks, Frieden said.
“Last week, Americans were 8 times more likely to be killed by COVID than Europeans,” he said.
The number of deaths, and cases, in the United States is possibly underestimated because there are not enough other people tested, mavens said.
How many other people die from the virus?
Using data accumulated through August 10, the CDC predicted that between 180,000 and 200,000 more people in the United States would die by September 5 from coronavirus.This prediction was based on forecasts obtained from 31 model groups.
The University of Washington Institute for Health Assessment and Measurement predicted on August 6 that another 300,000 people would die from the virus until December 1, according to a press release on the group’s website.
But the IHME forecast is 50% of Americans dressed in masks.If 95% wore masks, the number of deaths could be reduced to 66,000, the IHME said.
