Covid-19: India 197 new infections in one day

NEW DELHI: India reported 197 fresh coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, the Union health ministry said in an update on Thursday. The country’s active caseload has declined to 2,309, while the total number of cases reported since the pandemic hit in 2020 rose to 4,46,80,583. India has recorded 5,30,723 covid deaths till date.

Currently, Karnataka has 194 active cases, Kerala 1,353 active cases, Maharashtra 145 cases, Odisha cases, Rajasthan 49 cases, Tamil Nadu 59, Uttar Pradesh 21 and West Bengal 54 active cases.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 0. 10%, while the weekly positivity rate stood at 0. 11%. Active cases constitute 0. 01% of total infections. The recovery rate stands at 98. 80%, according to the Ministry of Health.

According to the ministry, 220. 14 million doses of vaccine have been administered as part of the national vaccination campaign. In the last 24 hours, 61,680 doses of vaccine have been administered.

At the same time, a surge in infections in China and countries such as the United States, Australia and Japan has raised new concerns about the possibility of approaching waves of contamination. As a result, India made RT-PCR testing mandatory for travelers from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand from January 1. They will need to upload their reports to the Air Suvidha portal before travelling. This is in addition to the random 2% that is carried out on all foreign passengers upon arrival at an Indian airport.

INSACOG, under the supervision of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), continued genome sequencing to track any new variants. Hospitals are also frequently monitored for cases of influenza-like illness (ILD) and SARI.

The Union Health Ministry on Monday said samples collected from sentinel sites revealed the presence of all Omicron variants in the community. Sentinel sites of the government’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IPDS) referred 324 COVID19 samples for sequencing to 22 INSACOG laboratories. The samples were collected from December 29 to January 7 at other sentinel locations such as hospitals.
