The start of the new school year, the lifting of some restrictions inside, the return of tourists and the cooler weather generate fears that a wave of Covid-19 infections is coming.

Central and Eastern European countries react to the outbreak of infections when the region enters winter.

Some have re-imposed restrictions and even closed borders to foreigners; others are reluctant to do so at this time.

The country of southeastern Europe last week recorded a record 1,713 new instances of Covid-19 in 24 hours, a figure recorded since the start of the pandemic, as the detection rate has remained constant for the next two months.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Romania has the mortality rate in the European Union, 2. 8 consisting of 100,000 citizens.

The most productive EU Member States are Germany, Denmark, Cyprus, Finland and Latvia, with a rate of 0. 1 per 100,000 citizens.

“The stage is stable, we have constructions, but we think we’re limiting for now. New activities such as return to school, opening indoor restaurants, the electoral crusade and Election Day can simply lead to construction on the number of infections in Covid-19.

It all depends on how Romanians comply with health measures, such as mandatory masks, social distance maintenance and advanced hygiene protocols,” said Andrei Baciu, Secretary of State of the Romanian Ministry of Health at EUobserver.

Romania lifted restrictions on indoor restaurants and also raised the number of indoor participants and personal events to 50 and one hundred people, respectively.

The country is also in the midst of an electoral crusade with elections scheduled for Sunday.

Public fitness expert Rzvan Chereche warns that there will be an increase in the number of cases after local elections and that some blocking measures may be restored, and believes the government has taken populist action in its support.

Dragos Garofil, Secretary of State of Romania’s Ministry of Health, had planned relaxation measures long before the election campaign.

“After seeing an increase in the number of cases, we should not take any additional such action. We also did not plan to impose blockade measures after the election,” he told EUobserver.

Romania’s Health Minister Nelu T-taru said Romania is still facing the first wave of the pandemic, and if regulations are followed, the number of cases can be minimized in October or November.

South of the border with Romania, Bulgaria also recorded a higher number of Covid-19 cases than at the beginning of the year. Covid-19 deaths have decreased, after peaking in early September, but are still above spring levels.

Kaloyan Staykov, a fitness economist at the Bulgarian Institute for Market Economics, told EUobserver that no one can wait when a covid-19 wave will occur and what economic effect it could have.

If a wave at the moment and a blockage match seasonal influenza, the effect can be much greater.

“A momentary blockade in the fourth quarter may feel even stronger, as fourth-quarter GDP includes a higher percentage of the country’s annual GDP. “

On September 1, Hungary will close its borders to foreigners, exempting other people arriving from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Hungary recorded a record 1,017 cases in a day without getting married. During the summer, new infections in Hungary remained more frequently below 50 days, however, the country has since noticed an immediate increase in infection rates.

The closure of the border has angered Brussels, and some see it as part of Hungary’s commitments in the Schengen zone.

Slovakia and the Czech Republic are also looking to combat what increasingly looks like a momentary wave of infections, after a quiet summer.

The Czech Republic has gone from a daily count of about 400 in summer to 3,123 new infections daily on 17 September. Masks will again be mandatory in enclosed spaces and restaurants and terraces must be closed at midnight.

Across the region, as other people gather indoors during the fall and winter, we can continue to expect an increase in infections. Cold weather can be more challenging, as coronaviruses and influenza can circulate at the same time.
