Weekly COVID-19 hospitalizations have reached their lowest point since the start of the pandemic, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
There were 5,615 COVID-related hospitalizations in the recent maximum week available. By comparison, there were more than 150,000 weekly admissions at the height of the circulating Omicron variant in early 2022.
“The decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths to those new lows is encouraging, as it appears that our public fitness measures and vaccination efforts have paid off,” said Dr. John Brownstein, chief innovation officer at Boston Children’s Hospital and chief medical officer of ABC. News. donor.
The CDC’s forecast for new hospitalizations indicates that admissions will most likely remain robust over the next 4 weeks.
“It is vital to continue to monitor new variants and protective fitness behaviors to avoid potential spikes,” Brownstein added.
The news comes as requirements for hospitals to report data on respiratory illnesses, such as COVID-related hospital admissions, expire at the end of April. Federal officials plan to use other data resources, such as sewage, lab tests and emergency department data to report on the spread of the disease.
“A key lesson we’ve learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is the importance of having notification systems in place before an active emergency,” a CDC spokesperson told aArray. “This knowledge has significant and ongoing value in protective fitness and patient protection, as well as public fitness,” he continued.
CDC data shows that about 22. 6% of adults and 14% of young people have received the updated COVID vaccine, which is formulated to offer greater protection against existing subvariants. People 65 and older were due to get an additional dose of up-to-date COVID vaccination this spring because of their increased risk of severe illness, according to the CDC.
The Food and Drug Administration’s organization of independent advisers is expected to meet in mid-March to discuss the strains to choose in upcoming COVID vaccine formulas. As the virus has evolved since the start of the pandemic, vaccines have been adapted to offer greater protection against existing strains.
COVID deaths have also declined this year, reaching new lows. According to the CDC, there have been about 231 COVID deaths in the last week at most, according to the CDC. However, knowledge about deaths is delayed and possibly incomplete.
At the height of the pandemic, more than 25,000 Americans were dying from the virus as the Delta variant spread across the country.
“It’s very important that we implement physically powerful surveillance and knowledge gathering to temporarily respond to any changes in virus behavior,” Brownstein said.
