“COVID-19 has ruined pig breeding”

A pig breeder, Fortune Alabi, said Saturday in Lagos that the COVID-19 pandemic had hampered the breeding and sale of pigs, after locking up through the disease.

Alabi made the revelation in an interview with Nigerian news firm on Saturday in Lagos, while talking about trends in the agricultural sector since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have had the promotion of our animals due to the closing of the borders to our West African neighbors, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It affected us because we spent more on pig feed, high costs and poor sales.

“Our pigs are the most sought after through our neighbouring countries, especially the Republic of Benin. Most pig farms in southern Nigeria supply pigs to West African countries.

“Immediately the borders were closed by COVID-19, our sales began because other people no longer come to us.

“Local pig manufacturers do not serve buyers because we are used to buyers coming to buy us in giant quantities before this period.

“We are promoting the decline of pigs right now, but we are spending more to feed them because lately demand for red meat is low. “

Alabi also deplored what he described as a low intake of red meat among Nigerians for cultural and cultural reasons.

He said pig breeding will bring the pharmaceutical industry to life if brands get pigs started making drugs.

He said there is a desire to redirect red meat intake due to the superior nutritional content and benefits of pigs.

“We want the pig farming price chain to increase our yields.

“When our pharmaceutical industry develops, pigs will be in the foreground for the production of certain medicines. Unfortunately, the maximum of local pharmaceutical corporations only in the sale of duty-free drugs and not in production. (NAN)
