SIDNEY – The coronavirus has affected Sarah Steenrod and Tootie the Travelling Tutu’d Turkey.
Turkey’s annual 14th Trot, sponsored through the First Presthroughterian Church, cancelled due to COVID-19.
“The occasion was thought of as a cross-country assembly with 150 participants,” said President Sarah Steenrod. “We surpassed that number after the moment or the third year because we have 800 runners.
Therefore, Steenrod said, the Turkey Trot committee made the difficult resolution of canceling this year’s race.
Turkey Trot’s main goal, Steenrod said, is to collect food for those in need and, with coronavirus still in full impact, the need for food in the county has not diminished, but is greater in each and every corner. county.
“In 2019, we collected more than 3 tons of food and $3,500 in donations of money. They all went to Alpha Community Center to be used to combat food insecurity,” Steenrod said.
And while his face on Turkey’s 2020 trot would possibly seem a little different, the purpose remains the same for collecting food and financial donations for the Alpha Center.
“This year we will organize a catering service with wheel drive,” Steenrod said. “It will take place on Wednesday, November 25, 16 to 19 a. m. and Thursday, November 26 at 7 a. m. parking lot of the first Presbyterian church. People should deposit their non-perishable food donations at any time.
“As complicated as canceling the race, we knew we had to protect our volunteers and coronavirus participants. “
Steenrod said he contacted Kent Topp at the Sydney-Shelby County Department of Health to organize the race. In the end, the physical condition and protection of those affected were the most sensitive priority.
Culver’s, Turkey Trot’s wife for 10 years, will continue at this year’s event, Steenrod said.
“We can’t do our annual fundraising and registration party, but Culver will continue to sell Turkey Bucks to raise money,” he said. “They sell for $1 and expect to have a sea of turkeys in the restaurant. “
Allison’s Custom Jewelry, 104 E, Mason Road, also a sponsor for many years, will also organize a food collection at the company. The week of November 0-14, Allison will organize a food collection. Anyone who brings two non-perishable food products will get 20% on any stock purchase. Steenrod will be in the store on November 14 dressed as a turkey in honor of the event.
Culver and Allison will also have large amounts of donations in companies. Donations of money can also be made on the church’s website, www. sidneyfirstpres. org.
“We will have Turkey Trot T-shirts to buy online only,” Steenrod said.
Shirts charge $20 and can be ordered at www. sidneyfirstpres. org.
“When you leave your meal from November 25 to 26, you can leave your shirt,” Steenrod said.
All collected food will be delivered to Alpha Community Center, Steenrod said. Cash donations will be made on Shelthrough County Community Foundation Game Day for Alpha Community Center. All donations of up to $5,000 will be compensated through the Community Foundation.
“The coronavirus has hit the net hard,” Steenrod said. “If there’s a time when we have a lack of food confidence in our network, it’s now. “
Although masks are turkey Trot 2020’s widespread activities, Steenrod said the occasion would return next year, bigger than ever.
“Next year is the year 15 for the Turkish trot,” Steenrod said. “We’ll go back to work and it’ll be a big deal!”
