Deaths in the United States plummeted last year and COVID-19 has fallen to the No. 1 cause in the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.

Deaths from COVID-19 followed those from central disease, cancer and injuries such as drug overdoses, motor vehicle deaths and shootings. In 2020 and 2021, only core disease and cancer were ahead of the coronavirus.
Deaths in the U. S. U. S. rates are increasing year after year, in part because the country’s population has grown. The pandemic has accelerated this trend, making 2021 the deadliest in U. S. history. The U. S. has more than 3. 4 million deaths. But 2022 saw the first drop in deaths since 2009.
The 2022 count is around 3. 3 million, a 5% drop from 2021, but still much higher than in pre-pandemic years. The CDC cautioned that last year’s figures are initial and may be replaced a bit after further analysis.
Coronavirus-related death rates have declined for nearly all Americans. The idea of the virus is the underlying cause of some 187,000 deaths in the U. S. The U. S. government last year accounted for about 6% of deaths. to the south and an adjacent region stretching west to Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, the CDC said.
Death rates from central disease and cancer have increased during the pandemic, the CDC said. The cancer death rate had been declining for 20 years before COVID-19 hit.
The CDC report showed a slight drop in injury deaths last year, falling to about 218,000 from about 219,500 the year before. That would be a surprise, given emerging trends in drug overdoses and gun deaths.

CDC officials noted that this number could increase. Data on death certificates for injury deaths tends to take longer because many involve police investigations.
