COVID-19: Egypt closes mosque for non-compliance with the faithful

Cairo: The Egyptian government closed a giant mosque in Cairo until it realized that the faithful took no precautions to stop the spread of the new coronavirus.

The Awqaf Ministry, who is guilty of mosques in Cairo, said he had to close the Al Hussain mosque, named after the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PSL) and sent his imams and other staff to interrogate them for “breach of duty.”

The ministry suggested that its staff raise awareness among the faithful of the importance of taking precautions and monitoring compliance with regulations as mosques open for prayers and close them after prayers have become legal responsibility.

The closure of the Al Hussain mosque took effect on Thursday night. This happens almost a week after Egypt reopened mosques across the country for the organization’s daily prayers, for Friday prayers. At the time, the government suggested to the faithful that they strictly adhere to precautions to prevent the proliferation of COVID-19. They come with keeping their distance, using non-public prayer mats and ablutions at home.

Some neighbors of the Al Hussain mosque have accused the faithful of violating the precautions against coronavirus.

“Since its reopening, the mosque was filled, ” said a guy named Farhat. “Some faithful stayed inside the mosque after the prayers were finished. Others ignored the regulations to distance themselves despite the presence of symptoms on the ground,” he told a local television station.

Last March, the government closed places of worship in Egypt as a component of measures to curb the spread of the virus in the country by some one hundred million people.

So far, Egypt has recorded a total of 71,299 infections, adding 3,120 deaths similar to a build-up in the number of cases.

The government has recently eased some restrictions related to the virus, removing a night-snout, to revitalize the economy.
