Costa Rica reopens its borders to Americans living in six states.

Residents of Vermont, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut can return to Costa Rica starting September 1.

Many countries closed their borders to American tourists by the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus. Costa Rica’s reopening strategy is unique in its targeted opening of the border.

As of August 3, these countries were among those that the Americans could stop in the pandemic, according to National Geographic: Albania, Brazil, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Ireland, Mexico, Rwanda, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and many Caribbean islands, as well as Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas and Bermuda.
