Nutrition experts and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s breastfeeding crusade expressed fear that the COVID-19 pandemic is gradually turning nutrition dynamics and giving breast milk replacement manufacturers the opportunity to interfere with best breastfeeding practices.
Experts also expressed fears that the COVID-19 pandemic will be a global public fitness emergency with implications for the policy of nutritional interventions and fitness.

In his presentation of the webinar, which also highlighted the links between breastfeeding and the environment in the context of Nigeria and infant feeding policy and early years of training (ANJE), UNICEF Chief of Nutrition, Dr. Simeon Nanama, noted that measures taken through governments around the world involve those of COVID-19 have caused further economic devastation.
Nanama said that many families, especially those with infants and young children, are involved in protecting their children from breastfeeding their children at a time like this, while others who wish to breastfeed have no power due to worsening family food insecurity.
“Nigeria has made progress in expanding the exclusive breastfeeding rate from 17% in 2013 to 29% in 2018.This is, on average, a 1% increase consistent with the year.While Nigeria will meet the World Health Assembly’s 50% target by 2025, exclusive breastfeeding appears to be one of the few nutritional signs in which Nigeria is making slow but steady progress.
Continuing, Nanama stated that the production, distribution and use of breast milk substitutes, BMS, has negative effects on the environment.
He lamented that, while experts are trying to perceive how the pandemic is turning the dynamics of nutritional behavior in the country, the manufacturers and sellers of breast milk substitutes have noticed the opportunity for a strategic and opportunistic marketing of their products that most likely interferes with optimal breastfeeding practices.
“In addition to the additional monetary burden on families, as well as their negative effect on the progression of children, breast milk substitutes such as instant formula and other dairy products play a role in environmental degradation and climate replacement in contexts of progression and emergency such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We want the application of opposing BMS regulations to protect breastfeeding and the environment.”
