As Nigeria joined the rest of the world in hosting this year’s World Breastfeeding Week from 7-7 August, the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF suggested that mothers continue to breastfeed their young children in compliance with all mandatory COVID-19 hygiene and protection precautions. Pandemic.
UNICEF under pressure that the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for more powerful measures for exclusive breastfeeding.
Studies have shown that breast milk saves children’s lives by providing antibodies that stimulate babies’ fitness and diseases of many years of formation. While researchers continue to control breast milk from mothers who showed or suspected COVID-19, existing evidence indicates that COVID-19 is unlikely to be transmitted through breastfeeding.
This year’s World Breastfeeding Week focuses on “Supporting Breastfeeding for a Healthier Planet.”
Also in a joint press release from UNICEF and the World Health Organization, WHO, the duo, suggested that governments locate cutting-edge responses and publicize women’s access to breastfeeding advice, an essential component of breastfeeding support.
UNICEF Representative in Nigeria Peter Hawkins said: “The existing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as maximum emergencies, leaves families with young people in an incredibly vulnerable position.
Given the lack of existing evidence that transmission of the virus can simply occur through breast milk, we propose that mothers be encouraged to start and continue breastfeeding their young children while following smart hygiene practices.
UNICEF and WHO proposed that young children be fed only breast milk for the first 6 months, after which they deserve to continue breastfeeding, as well as other food and nutrients, until they are 2 years of age or older. Currently, only 29% of young Nigerians aged 0 to 6 months receive exclusive breastfeeding.
Breast milk substitutes, such as infant formula, other dairy products and beverages, contribute not only negatively to children’s fitness and development, but also to environmental degradation and climate change. Breast milk, on the other hand, is herbal and is the only food a baby wants in the first 6 months of life.
UNICEF also called on the relevant agencies to strictly enforce the National Regulations on the Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and the applicable World Health Assembly (WHA) resolutions by ending the poor marketing of breast milk substitutes. Civil society organizations also do not solicit or accept donations from breast milk substitutes in emergencies.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the availability and higher for fitness workers, adding midwives and nurses, to provide qualified breastfeeding recommendations to mothers and families is essential.
Efforts will need to be made to increase investment in maternal, child and youth nutrition interventions at the point of the network and to implement policies that allow 6-month maternity leave in the public sector and an enabling environment for breastfeeding in the personal sector. The defence of paid paternity leave must also continue to ensure the full participation of any parent in the first few moments of the child.
“With more powerful regulatory provisions and greater investment in breastfeeding, we can make sure Nigeria’s moms are trained to breastfeed,” Peter Hawkins said. “Breastfeeding is the safest during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.”
