The African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, has started the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative in Nigeria to boost COVID-19 vaccination.
Through this partnership, the federal government introduced its mass vaccination campaign, ESCALAS 3. 0.
The implementation of the Save Lives and Livelihoods initiative will combine the efforts of the government, Africa CDC and other partners to increase the uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The implementation crusade will focus on threat communication and network engagement (RCCE), vaccine capacity, logistics and vaccine surveillance to enable Nigeria to achieve its COVID-19 vaccination goal.
According to the National Coordinator (Nigeria), Africa CDC Saving Lives and Livelihoods Initiative, Dr. Bakary Sonko, “As the Federal Government launches SCALES 3. 0, the African Union and Africa CDC are honored to partner with it to make the goals set out in SCALES 3. 0 succeed, offering resources to the country through the Save Lives and Livelihoods initiative.
He pushed for the Save Lives and Livelihoods program to convene vaccine generation and delivery activities in 11 states.
As part of this, the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) have planned to implement 5,002 vaccination clusters in 11 states, with the goal of vaccinating more than 1. 3 million people each week.
At the official launch of the country’s ESCALAS 3. 0 strategy, the Secretary of Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, wanted to get vaccines to the population.
He said what the country faces is a shortage of vaccines and a reluctance to vaccinate the population.
“No one is until Nigeria reaches 70% of the eligible population. Integrating COVID-19 vaccination with immunization delivery will help achieve better outcomes and the number of others vaccinated.
“As of August 3, 2022, only 24. 4% of the eligible population was vaccinated. As per our stated purpose even as a presidential guidance committee, we have gone further,” Mustapha said.
Nigerian Health Minister Osagie Ehanire said the SCALES 3. 0 strategy will boost the integration of COVID-19 vaccination into the vaccination regimen to ensure none are carried out in isolation.
He thanked all partners for their contribution to the immunization crusade in Nigeria. “We have a long road ahead of us; the overall functionality is below our desired targets because only 3 states (Nasarawa, Jigawa and Kano) have vaccinated more than 50% of their eligible population.
Also speaking at the launch, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaibu, reported that after the launch of the SCALES 2. 0 strategy six months ago to boost embodied immunization, Nigeria’s immunization policy has been developed. It went up from 17 million to 40 million. That, he said, represents an accumulation of more than one hundred percent.
“SCALES 3. 0 would use a generational, human-centered design to address weak perceptions of COVID-19 in the country,” Shuaibu says.
The ultimate goal of the Africa CDC through the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation is to advance the goal set by the African Union to vaccinate 70% of the African population against COVID-19 by the end of 2022.
