Covid-19: 157 Cases Of Sub-Variant JN.1 Detected In India; Highest From Kerala, Gujarat

A total of 157 cases of the JN. 1 subvariant of COVID-19 have been identified in India, according to updated INSACOG data on Thursday.

Kerala tops the list with cases, followed by Gujarat with 34 cases. The JN. 1 subvariant is a lineage of the Omicron subvariant known as BA. 2. 86 or Pirola.

Several states are witnessing a rise in COVID cases, and as of now, nine states and Union territories have confirmed the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant. 

According to data from the Union Ministry of Health, India recorded 702 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. Thus, the number of active cases in the country amounts to 4,097. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has issued guidelines for handling COVID-19 suspected or positive cases in hospitals due to the sudden surge in Coronavirus cases nationwide.

About the JN. 1 variant

The JN. 1 variant of COVID-19, first known in Kerala, recorded a total of 109 cases reported in India on Wednesday, according to Health Ministry sources.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported JN. 1 as a variant of interest, distinguishing it from its parental lineage, BA. 2. 86.

However, the global fitness framework posed by the overall threat through JN. 1 remains low based on the existing evidence.
