Local government officials in the UK are expected to look for an operator for Doncaster Sheffield Airport, after a long-term lease agreement was submitted to reopen the facility.
The airport has not made a profit in its 17 years of life and owner Peel Group, after conducting a study, might not identify any proposals that would keep it open.
Although Doncaster Sheffield closed in 2022, the council has applied to resurrect it.
Following “detailed negotiations” with Peel Group, the council says it has signed a 125-year lease on the site.
“This is a critical milestone in the reopening process,” adds Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones.
After securing the lease, the authority will seek to appoint an operator to manage and expand the airport.
“This procedure is underway and I’m hopeful that we’ll announce a partnership later in the spring,” Jones says.
The lease is part of the South Yorkshire Airport City scheme created for on-site repair operations.
