Hong Kong announced on Wednesday that it had approved an edition of the BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for young children and children under five, as part of broader measures to improve vaccination in the financial hub.

The government said it was discussing with the vaccine manufacturer the time limit for availability in the Special Administrative Region of China. The government has stated that each injection comprises one-tenth of the adult dose, reducing the risk of side effects.

The government approved the use of Chinese injections of Sinovac for children older than 6 months in August. Sinovac and BioNTech are the two vaccines available to Hong Kong residents.

About 7% of babies under the age of 2 have been vaccinated against covid, a rate of success, the government said.
