Coronavirus: number of COVID-19 victims in Latin America exceeds 200,000

The death toll in Latin America by the new coronavirus exceeded 200,000 on Saturday night, showing a Reuters count, underlining the region’s prestige as one of the global epicentres of the pandemic that pushes governments to the limit.

Apart from the United States, Brazil and Mexico have accumulated more deaths from the virus than any other country, and combined account for about 70% of the regional death toll. Both have struggled to balance the desire to curb the spread of the virus with restrictive security measures as they seek to reopen their economies, which have been hit by the crisis. Brazil reported a record 1,595 coronavirus deaths before the week and recorded another 1,088 on Saturday. Mexico recorded 784 deaths on Saturday and recorded more than 9,000 new infections with the virus for the first time. Other Latin American countries are also suffering to keep the coronavirus at bay, and the region has surpassed the 200,000 mark after Peru recorded another 191 deaths.
