Coronavirus – MENA: Statement through Dr Ahmed Al Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, on COVID-19

This week, our Region took a vital step in overcoming the two million cases of COVID-19.

We are seeing advances that remind us once again that we will have to remain fully vigilant in controlling this virus. Several countries that had controlled the transmission a few months ago, adding Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan and Lebanon, are now seeing an acceleration. in cases.

Other countries experiencing upward trends include Libya, the occupied Palestinian territory, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

With increased social gatherings and population mobility, increased travel abroad and masking levels remain low, it is perhaps inevitable that we will see a resurgence of instances in the Region. The challenge for all of us is to roll back these measures in a way and at a rate that minimizes the risk to public health.

It is now more critical than ever for those who have not yet been infected, especially the most vulnerable. By aggressively searching and isolating each case, and tracking and stopping each contact, we not only decrease transmission, but also reduce tension in hospitals so critical cases of COVID-19 and other patients can get the urgent care they need.

In some countries, in addition to Iraq and Morocco, hospitals are already overcrowded and being filled to the limit of their capacity, which can have serious consequences for others in need of important medical services.

In the future, several new threat points also jeopardize our ability to substantially replace the course of the pandemic in our Region.

Many countries have already started opening schools or are in the process of opening schools this month. Naturally, students, parents, teachers, and other schools are involved in the potential threat of infection spreading among students. Infection in schoolchildren can also cause infections in other vulnerable people, adding the elderly and others with comorability.

In many countries in the Region, the flu season is about to begin, which can lead to new spikes and outbreaks of suspicious cases.

To reduce the threat of transmission in the coming weeks and months, Americans and communities will need to continue to implement recognized and proven prevention measures, especially in contexts such as social gatherings, schools, and other public events. when it is not imaginable to distance ourselves socially is one of the ultimate tactics effective in shielding themselves and our families.

Countries want to intensify existing public fitness measures, focusing on screening, isolation, and treatment of patients, coverage of physical fitness personnel, and tactile research. Plus, we deserve to introduce dedicated “smart” locks to save you social gatherings in sensitive spaces that are experiencing significant buildup in transmission.

In the coming weeks, we will work with countries in the Region to provide information on national intra-action reviews of COVID-19. This procedure will enable countries to conduct regular reviews of their national and subnational reaction to COVID-19 and identify practical spaces for rapid action and sustainable improvement.

Much has been done in our Region in recent months to involve this epidemic, but much remains to be done, we allow COVID-19 fatigue to take root.
