Coronavirus Hunger: Find a Food Bank in Ocean County

OCEAN COUNTY, New Jersey – When you take a look around Ocean County, it’s easy to see the effects of coronavirus on our lifestyle. What’s less visual is the number of other people who are now worried about having enough to eat.

Feeding America, the country’s largest famine organization, says coronavirus-related economic crises can bring the number of Americans with food insecurity to 54 million by the end of the year, 17 million more Americans than those with food insecurity before the pandemic. For some, it’s about running out of cash at the grocery store before the end of the week and eating large amounts of canned pasta and rice dishes.

For others, a lack of confidence in food means genuine hunger.

In Ocean County, about 52,900, or 8.9 percent, were food insecure before the pandemic, according to Feeding America’s interactive “Map the Meal Gap” study.

Job losses and other coronavirus-related economic crises can push ocean county’s lack of food confidence rate to 14.2 percent by the end of the year.

Feeding America, whose two hundred member food banks come with Fulfill, the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean counties, based in Neptune, reports increased demand and a greater need for volunteers and donors.
