Midnight end time imposed in parallel with new restrictions for neighbors
Bars and restaurants in Greece’s tourist spots were ordered to close early after the government established a curfew at night in reaction to the recent accumulation of coronavirus cases.
The curfew will force institutions to close from 7 a.m. in popular destinations such as Corfu, Rhodes and Crete, Aristotelia Peloni government spokeswoman Aristotelia said Monday.
Greece has reportedly been the selection destination for many British tourists after restrictions were imposed on travellers returning to quarantine for 14 days in Spain, which is sometimes popular.

British travellers are not subject to any quarantine restrictions upon returning from Greece, they are required through the Greek government to complete a passenger location form before travelling there.
From 17 August, passengers bound for Greece from Belgium, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden must give a negative result of Covid, received up to 72 hours earlier, to the government upon arrival. The same applies to all passengers entering by land from border countries.
Ms. Peloni announced the new restrictions in a televised confrontation during the midnight curfew for bars, restaurants and cafes; which will also cover the tourist attractions of Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Larissa, Mykonos, Santorini, Zakynthos and Kos and will remain in place until 23 August.
The Greek Ministry of Culture also closed the Ancient Agora Museum, a major archaeological site in central Athens, for two weeks after a cleaner diagnosed with a coronavirus.
A ministry said that the museum would be absolutely sanitized, while the existing site of the ancient Agora, which was the administrative, political and social center of the ancient city, will remain open.
The new measures are being implemented to combat the accumulation of coronavirus cases, which Greek Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias said motivated through others who did not comply with social distance and hygiene regulations.
Daily case figures have increased considerably since the end of July in Greece. A record daily number reported on Monday with 202 new cases, according to world health organization data, far exceeding the previous record of 156 set in April.
Writing on Twitter before the announcement of the new restrictions, Mr. Kikilias said: “I once called again other young people and citizens who do not respect fundamental non-public protection. to take into account their day-to-day work with vulnerable groups, the rest of our fellow citizens. and the country. »
Greece has recorded some 5,749 cases of Covid and 213 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
