(Reuters) – The new coronavirus pandemic has disrupted joint movements between the United States and Mexico that oppose meth labs running through Mexican cartels, U. S. Attorney General William Barr said Thursday.

Barr made two to Mexico in December and January, which he said led to greater cooperation between the two countries in the fight against Mexican drug cartels, adding further extraditions from gang leaders.

U. S. President Donald Trump has suggested Mexico intensify cooperation in the fight against drug gangs, from the blood bath of nine Mexican-American women and youth in northern Mexico through alleged poster perpetrators last November.

Barr said the coronavirus pandemic had acted as a brake on some operations opposed to Mexican cartels, in terms of plans to destroy the underground meth labs that fuel the illegal drug market in the United States.

“Unfortunately, Covid intervened and moderated much of the progress we had made, reducing our momentum,” Barr at a press conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

“But we are sure that once Covid stops working, we will be incarnating with Mexico again. “

The Mexican Chancellery did not comment on Barr’s statements.

Barr spoke as the U. S. Drug En control administration had the effects of a six-month operation by Mexican cartels operating primary methamphetamine “transportation centers” in the United States.

The operation resulted in 1,840 arrests and seizure of more than 28,560 pounds (12,955 kg) of methamphetamine, $43. 3 million in drugs and 284 firearms, the DEA said.

Barr said more than 60 figures have been extradited from the Mexican cartel this year and more are expected. In 2018, Mexico extradited the United States and 58 last year, according to Mexican data.
