Confirmed coronavirus cases have dropped to 15 international cases over the past week and new infections have declined through nineArray, the World Health Organization said Wednesday in its weekly assessment of the state of the pandemic.
More than 14,000 deaths and 5. 3 million new cases were reported last week, and the number declined in all regions of the global Western Pacific.
The number of cases in Japan increased through 6Array, South Korea through 2 and Russia through 39Array, the WHO said.
In the Americas, deaths have dropped by 15 percent, according to the WHO, while deaths in Europe have dropped by about a third. African countries saw a 183 percent increase in deaths.
On Sunday, 593 million cases and 6. 4 million deaths were reported worldwide since the beginning of the pandemic, the WHO said.
As in the United States, Omicron’s BA. 5 subproperation is responsible for the highest number of infections everywhere, comprising more than 70% of the genetically sequenced virus samples provided to WHO. Overall, 99% of the sequences reported in the last month were through omicron variants.
While this seemed like an improvement at first glance, the WHO said it was to know to what extent declining testing and other surveillance measures had influenced those numbers.
“Current trends in reported COVID-19 cases and deaths deserve to be interpreted with caution, as several countries have gradually replaced COVID-19 testing strategies, resulting in a decrease in the total number of tests performed and therefore a drop in the number of cases detected,” the WHO said in its report. “In addition, country information is frequently updated through WHO to incorporate changes in reported COVID-19 cases and deaths made in countries retrospectively. “
