The Health Ministry reported 31,553 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total to 5,000,694 and 734 deaths, bringing the death toll to 148,228. The daily moving average for the past week was 658 deaths consistent with the day, compared with 1,073 deaths consistent with the day in the last week of July. The average number of new instances was 26,140 days, almost half the rate at the end of July. The epidemiologist at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Roberto Medronho, warned that the figures could be much more consistent if COVID-19 testing is more widespread. “We will soon have 150,000 dead, an alarming figure,” he told Reuters. “We are seeing the government increasingly social distancing despite the number of instances. ” Far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the severity of the virus, even though it was inflamed and had to isolate himself for two weeks. Bolsonaro has opposed the lockdowns and has suggested to Brazilians come back to life in general so that the economy can recover from what is expected to be its most internally recorded annual recession. As winter draws to a close and tropical temperatures rise, Brazilians flock to crowded beaches and in bars and restaurants without taking any precautions, he warned. “I’m afraid we have a wave at the moment like in Europe, which is a big fear for public fitness officials,” he said.
