ai weiwei has published a documentary feature film about locking up the COVID-19 epidemic in Wuhan, China. The Chinese artist directed and produced the film remotely from Europe, while the film was aimed at ordinary citizens living in Wuhan when they were placed under unprecedented closure. “CORONATION” examines the political spectrum of Chinese state control from the first to the last day of the Closure of Wuhan. Large emergency hospitals were established within days, 40,000 medical employees were bused from across the country, fleets of cell sanitation robots were deployed and city citizens locked inside their homes.

“The film takes us to the center of those transitional hospitals and extensive care units, with the entire diagnostic and repair process coming up,” reads on the online page of the film CORONATION. “Patients and their families are interviewed, reflecting their image reflected in the pandemic and expressing anger and confusion at the senseless restriction of their freedoms across the state. The film also immerses us in the personal lives of Americans living locked up: a couple tries to take the house to wuhan, a messenger delivers must-have pieces to citizens who can’t get out of their community, an emergency employee trapped in limbo is forced to live outside their car, a former party official and his son discuss how the media serves and the party’s reaction to the epidemic. A grieving son sails through the bureaucracy to retrieve his father’s ashes.
