Consultant uses artwork to raise budget for medical devices in Ukraine

A representative of a hospital who took oil paint to ease the pressures of the Covid pandemic is now promoting her creations to raise funds for Ukraine.

Dr Jennifer Elder, a pulmonologist at Ulster Hospital, uses the co-Down Coast landscape to motivate her photos.

Dr Elder, along with other doctors from across the UK, have joined MAU (Ukrainian Medical Aid), which is increasing the budget to send medical materials to Ukraine.

Devices and ambulances donated to the cause are now actively used in Ukrainian hospitals and mau’s fundraising amounts to almost £100,000.

Dr Elder, who was born in Scotland but has lived in Co Down for 19 years, said his works were encouraged through attractive venues such as Strangford Lough, Murlough and Tobermory.

“I began to portray confinement as a means of escape, after long days running in a room of high dependence on Covid-19.

“We all reveled in a bunch of other lighting fixtures and moods in one day, which I hope I’ve captured in my paintings.

“That’s one of the reasons I paint. “

Impressed by his portraits and his commitment to Ukraine, the acting president of the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, Jonathan Patton, commissioned a portrait of the new hospital block at Ulster Hospital for his office.

“I think it’s vital to show the generosity of spirit of our staff.

“When I saw Dr. Elder’s paintings and learned that she donated one hundred percent of the budget of her paintings to the Ukraine crisis, I asked her to commission a painting for the president’s office at the foundation’s headquarters.

“Jennifer’s representation of the Ulster Hospital site is a fabulous creation and celebrates not only our donations to Ukraine, but also recognizes our progress and commitment to our patients and within the trust.

“I’m very happy to settle for his portrait and now he hangs proudly in the office. “

Dr. Elder said she followed in the footsteps of her late grandfather, who was an artist and art teacher.
