BEIJING – Consecutive tornadoes have killed 12 other people in central and east China and wounded more than three hundred people, the government said Saturday.
Eight others died Friday night inside Wuhan city and four others in Shengze city, about 400 kilometres east of Jiangsu Province, local governments said.
The first tornado hit Shengze around 7 p. m. , damaging homes and factories and cutting off power, Xinhua state news agency reported. The government of the city of Suzhou, which oversees the city, said in a social media post that four other people had died and another 149 had been injured. Shengze is located near Shanghai on china’s east coast.
Another tornado hit Wuhan around 8:40 p. m. , with winds of 86 kilometers (53 miles) consistent with the hour, destroying more than two dozen houses and causing a power outage that affected 26,600 homes, officials in Wuhan said at a news convention Saturday. that eight other people were killed and 230 injured.
They said 28 houses collapsed in Wuhan, 130 were broken and economic losses amounted to 37 million yuan ($5. 7 million), Hubei Daily reported. Construction sheds and two cranes also broke, while broken power lines cut off the force, Xinhua said.
The photos showed a swarm of rescuers rummaging through the rubble of structures in Wuhan after Friday and staff cleaning steel debris at a factory in Shengze in the morning.
Wuhan is the city where COVID-19 was first detected at the expiration of 2019.
Tornadoes are rare in China: in July 2019, a tornado killed six others in northeastern Liaoning province, and one tornado the following month killed eight on the southern coastal island of Hainan.
In 2016, a tornado and a ha hascorer killed another 98 people in eastern Jiangsu Province.
