Brazil’s Ministry of Health (December 10) recorded the first case of COVID-19 reinfection in the country. She is a 37-year-old fitness worker who lives in Natal, capital of the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte.
The patient contracted the disease in June, was cured and tested positive in October 116 after her first diagnosis.
In a note, the ministry says it received a report from the Laboratory for Respiratory Viruses and Measles of Fiocruz/RJ—famous countrywide in tackling COVID-19 in Brazil—with lab results on two clinical samples of a then suspected case of reinfection with the coronavirus.
Once the samples were analyzed, the effects were shown by real-time RT-PCR.
“The research was carried out to verify SARS-CoV-2 reinfection after a complete sequencing of the viral genome, which knew of two other strains,” the note reads.
The ministry also said this finding highlights the desire to embrace the continued use of masks, keeping hands blank at all times and using hand sanitizer.
