BOGOTA —The policy adjustments planned by Colombia’s new leftist president, Gustavo Petro, constitute a “great opportunity” in the fight against deforestation and climate change, U. S. official Samantha Power said Monday.
While progress against deforestation and climate change is elusive, Colombia is a regional leader in the fight to prevent both, Power, administrator of the U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID), told reporters in Bogota on Monday.

Power made the comments after leading the Biden administration’s delegation at Petro’s rite of swearing-in on Sunday.
“What we have now is a president and a vice president, who are environmentalists, almost the first,” Power said. “We see this as a great opportunity. “
In April, U. S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order to expand efforts to combat climate change, adding efforts to combat commodity-induced deforestation and sustainable forest management.
Petro has long criticized the U. S. -led war as a failure and on Sunday called in his speech for a new foreign strategy to combat drug trafficking.
Colombia is one of the manufacturers of cocaine and faces constant pressure from Washington to eliminate drug cultivation and combat trafficking.
Power said his meeting last Monday with Petro addressed many non-unusual agendas, but reiterated earlier comments by U. S. officials that the two countries would agree on everything.
Petro has vowed to ban all new oil and steer Colombia away from coal production in favor of cleaner energy options.
The personal sector is watching the country’s evolution, Power said, adding that investment could increase soon.
“The personal sector is very, very interested in what’s happening in Colombia,” he said. “There are many tactics to encourage investment in the transition to renewables. . . I think we’re going to start to see that speed increase. “again. ” (Reporting via Oliver Griffin; Edited via Aurora Ellis)
