It circulated about a week before new immigration regulations came into force on March 11 prohibiting foreign medical and social staff from bringing their dependents into the UK (link archived).

This component of a series of measures unveiled by the UK government in December 2023 to reduce immigration figures, which also included extending the minimum wage threshold for a professional employee visa.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the cuts as “the biggest crackdown on legal immigration ever adopted. “

The video was shared with a similar claim elsewhere on Facebook here, here, and on X here.

But this claim is false. The video was filmed at the Resham Gali Bazaar in Hyderabad, Pakistan.

Through a keyword search and a search for the opposite Google symbol of one of the video’s keyframes, a longer edit of the fake video was discovered on this YouTube channel (archived link).

The caption of the video reads: “Hyderabad Pakistan Walking Tour, Passing Shahi Bazar, Resham Bazar. “

The 22-second clip shared with the fake can be seen at the beginning of this 48-minute and 31-second video.

The visual clues noted in the video shared in the fake post, which adds a prominent sign of a jewelry store that goes by the name of Sakhi Jewelers, match those noted in the YouTube video.

Below is a screenshot comparing a keyframe from the clip shared in posts (left) and a keyframe from the YouTube video (right), with similarities highlighted via AFP:

A keyword search on YouTube showed a video from the same location showing a similar environment and outlets at 1:12 (archived link).

Awais Shaikh, who works at a jewelry store adjacent to Sakhi Jewelers called Dhanak Jewelers, showed the location of the video.

“The video is from Resham Gali from Hyderabad and Sakhi Jeweler is by our side,” he told AFP.
