Climate pledges made in public should be reflected in the negotiating rooms: Egypt hosts COP27

Abul-Magd made the comments at a virtual news conference on Friday.

“Promises and commitments are made in front of the cameras, but in the negotiating rooms we are returning to the contradictory approach,” Abul-Magd said.

He pressed that public positions, such as those taken before the UN General Assembly in New York, “will only be valuable if they are not reflected and translated in the negotiating rooms and, frankly, this has not been the case until now. . “

“We, in the incoming presidency and as guilty diplomats, call on everyone to rise to the occasion and show leadership,” Abul-Magd said, cautiously opposed to using the ongoing geopolitical scenario as a pretext to reverse climate commitments.

The upcoming meteorological convention is expected to bring together 120 heads of state and more than 40,000 participants, the number ever recorded for a meteorological summit on the continent.

In addition, more than 3,000 journalists and media professionals from around the world will cover the conference.

Egypt has reiterated in more than one instance that it hopes to turn climate pledges into action at COP27, which will be held under the slogan “Together for implementation. “

Egypt has pledged to uphold Africa’s climate aspirations and pressure countries to meet their climate finance commitments.

Egypt’s vision for advancing climate action at COP27 stems from collaboration between governments, the personal sector, civil society and other stakeholders on the issues of adaptation, mitigation, loss and damage, and climate finance.

Egypt expressed its willingness to allow the participation of as many local and foreign civil society organizations as possible and express its perspectives at COP27 and the UN approved the participation of dozens of Egyptian and African NGOs in the conference.

Civil society will be allowed to organize demonstrations, demonstrations and sit-ins, Abul-Magd said, noting that protest organizers register their phone numbers and expected number of protesters in advance by email on the COP27 website.

Then, the presidency team will appoint one or two more people and put them in touch with the city government to agree on the main points of the protests, adding the moment, so that they take positions safely, Abul-Magd added.
