Climate crisis: Italian Alpine lake at historic lows

ROME. Italy’s alpine lakes are at their highest point amid northern Italy’s worst drought in 70 years, the Po Observatory said on Thursday.

Lake Como is at nine percent of its overall total capacity, while Lake Maggiore is at nine percent, Lake Garda at 22 percent and Lake Iseo at 8 percent, he said, ANSA reports.

“There is a massive deficit in water levels,” the observatory said.

The total amount of water in lakes at this time of year is about 550 million cubic meters, but this year it’s only 169 million, he said.

Man-made weather has exacerbated drought in Italy.
