A church leader in Ukraine who blamed same-sex marriage and “sin of humanity” from the pandemic tested Covid-19.
Honorary Patriarch Filaret of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church would have been hospitalized after positive for the virus.
At the age of 91, he is one of Ukraine’s most prominent leaders and has about 15 million followers.
But his previous comments on the reasons for the coronavirus outbreak have provoked outrage from LGBT groups, who have expressed fear for their “harmful statements” about egalitarian marriage.
In a television interview in March, Filaret said that Covid-19 “God’s punishment for the sins of men, the sin of mankind. “First of all, I mean same-sex marriage. “
According to the Ukrainian 112. international, he developed pneumonia, but remains in a solid condition.
“We tell them that during the planned trials, His Holiness Patriarch Filaret of Kiev and all of Russia-Ukraine tested positive for Covid-19,” reads on Filaret’s website.
“Now, His Holiness the Bishop is receiving treatment in a hospital.
The Patriarchate’s press service added in a statement: “As head of the Church and as a man, the patriarch has the freedom to express his views on morality.
“The Patriarchate reserved the right to counterclaims opposed to those seeking to abuse judicial protections to invade Ukraine’s classic circle of family values. “
