Christmas markets take position in 2022

There is nothing like a festive market to awaken the Christmas spirit in people.

Although those events date back to Vienna (the first recorded December market in the city dates back to 1298), the culture has spread around the world over the centuries.

From Germany to Switzerland to New York, it’s hard to find a coveted destination that doesn’t have an impressive annual advent market.

In fact, some are so popular that they have tourist attractions in their own right.

In recent years, several well-known festive markets have been forced to reduce or cancel all festivities due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the vast majority return by 2022.

Here’s our look at the Christmas markets around the world this year.

With reindeer rides, a giant Ferris wheel and an ancient nativity scene, Vienna’s magical exhibition perfectly sums up the festive spirit.

Although there are about twenty Christmas markets in the Austrian capital, the Wiener Christkindlmarkt, held in front of the town hall, or Rathausplatz, is one of its oldest and maximum classic events.

According to officials, the event, also known as Vienna’s Christmas Dream Market, will be more family-friendly this year, with larger spaces geared toward young visitors, and a 150-square-meter children’s ice rink will be added. .

It’s hard for a destination that makes Christmas grander than Switzerland.

Most Swiss cities are almost overrun by festive markets at this time of year and the atmosphere is amazing. Basel’s Christmas market is the largest and arguably the best.

Separated into two other sections at Barfusserplatz and Munsterplatz, it consists of some two hundred fabulously decorated stalls promoting spices, ornaments and Christmas candles.

Family attractions come with the fairytale forest at Munsterplatz with activities like gingerbread and candle decorating, a star workshop, and a festive train.

The Basel Christmas Market opens on November 24 and will continue until December 23.

Strasbourg, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, began in 1570, but has evolved significantly since then.

Spread across more than 10 locations, adding a component of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Grande Île, the popular market lights up the city with thousands of twinkling Christmas lights and festive decorations.

Before Covid, around two million people a year frequented the market, which includes many wooden chalet stalls promoting everything from decorations and gifts to local Alsatian wine.

Klebe Square is its most popular position thanks to the giant Christmas tree on display.

But visitors will find many magical attractions as they walk through the narrow alleys and pretty squares of the city.

Strasbourg Christmas Market from 25 November to 24 December.

Brussels comes alive at Christmas thanks to the Pleasures of Winter, which are more of a party than a market.

Old Town Square offers endless entertainment in the form of shows, dances and artistic workshops, while Wenceslas Square is ideal for homemade gifts and local delicacies such as klobasa (Czech sausage) and mulled wine.

The markets will take position from November 26 to January 6, 2023.

With over 1,000 superbly decorated Christmas trees decorating the beautiful park, and everything from fairground attractions to a classic Pixie Band for entertainment, it’s a winter party like no other.

This year, the occasion will feature a red Christmas center with projected photographs of Christmas stories, while a huge Christmas tree will be erected on Lake Tivoli.

The centerpiece of Tuomaan Markkinat is an antique carousel, but the countless vendors promoting classic Christmas specialties, glogi, the Finnish non-alcoholic edition of mulled wine with spices, and handicrafts are also a big attraction.

The prominent open-air market is a glorious sight to behold, with more than 150 custom-designed kiosks and a 17,000-square-foot skating rink that can be used whenever you have your own skates.
