China’s most sensible leaders have reaffirmed a desire to stick to the country’s “zero COVID” policy, while urging officials to be more specific with their restrictions, a move potentially aimed at streamlining the contentious process as public discontent with lockdowns grows.

At an assembly of the new Politburo Standing Committee chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the members, appointed to the most sensible governing framework at last month’s Communist Party congress, called for “more decisive” measures to curb the spread of the virus in order to resume general life and production as soon as possible. According to Xinhua news agency, the COVID-19 scenario “remains serious” as cases continue to emerge, they said.
