China is hit by a spike in COVID-19 cases after the week-long National Day holiday, just as the country’s most sensible leaders gather in Beijing for a meeting with President Xi Jinping.

The country recorded 1,645 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, the highest overall figure since Sept. 2. While Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang had the largest clusters, Beijing and Shanghai found new cases outside the lockdown, suggesting the virus may still spread.
