China warns Kazakhstan faces more fatal pneumonia epidemic than COVID-19

MOSCOW – Kazakhstan’s fitness friday rejected a Chinese claim that the Central Asian country is facing a more deadly pneumonia epidemic than the new coronavirus.

The Kazakh denial follows an opinion issued Thursday through the Chinese embassy that warned its citizens that they were opposing an epidemic of pneumonia in the former Soviet country with a higher mortality rate than coronavirus-induced pneumonia.

“This data is in line with reality,” Kazakhstan’s ministry of fitness said in a statement.

He noted that country statistics on pneumonia include patients who tested negative for coronavirus but who have symptoms compatible with COVID-19.

According to official data, the number of pneumonia cases increased to 55% in the first part to 2019: from 63436 to 98546.

However, Health Minister Alexei Tsoi said in a briefing Thursday that pneumonia mortality this year has fallen since grades last year, from 1,780 deaths in the first part of 2019 to 1,172 in the first part of this year.

The energy-rich Central Asian country temporarily brought a regional blockade and restrictions to stop the coronavirus pandemic, but faced a buildup of infections after lifting restrictions in May.

Last June, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev fired the country’s fitness minister, blaming him for the flaws that helped cause a wave of contagion.

Kazakhstan’s government imposed a two-week national blockade on Sunday to involve the outbreak.

The country has recorded more than 53,000 cases, totaling 264 deaths.

When asked to comment on Kazakhstan’s refusal to the Chinese embassy’s statement, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian declined to comment, saying Beijing expected more information.

“China hopes to continue its cooperation with Kazakhstan to jointly combat the epidemic and public fitness in both countries,” he said.
