China tries to shape coronavirus narrative viral messages

From mid-February to early March, Chinese state media social media sites published more than 3300 times a day, tripling the overall rate, according to Recorded Future, a cybersecurity consulting firm founded in Somerville, Massachusetts. These media were basically active on Facebook and Twitter, according to the study.

Chinese tweets, the researchers say, refer to Russia’s tactics, which referred to spreading messages that could generate doubt and anger about basic facts and publicize fictional accusations. Russia has also relied heavily on state media to spread its message online.

China’s Foreign Ministry responded to a request for comment and Russia denied disinformation.

Chinese advertising spending is accelerating a broader effort on social media, which prompted last year’s protests in Hong Kong, to shape opinion of China in the English-speaking world, the researchers said.

China has more than 200 politically classified ads on Facebook since beyond 2018, however, more than a third has been obtained in the past two months, said Vanessa Molter, a researcher at Stanford Internet Observatory, a cyberpolitics institute. Recent announcements aimed to shape the global belief that China controls the coronavirus outbreak, he said.
