China says COVID-19 restrictions are politically motivated

Jan. 3 (UPI) — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said Tuesday that COVID-19 restrictions imposed through some countries that oppose their travelers are backed by investigations, adding that the government is preparing to take retaliatory measures.

“We don’t think the entry restriction measures that some countries have taken against China are based on science,” Mao said.

USA. U. S. and others have complained that China has been open about COVID-19 cases among its citizens, raising concerns at home and in other Western countries about travelers from the communist country.

The European Union said last week that more COVID-19 checks for travelers from China would be “unjustified. “

The United States and Britain last week announced new restrictions for Chinese travelers, saying Jan. 5 would require a negative COVID-19 check before departure for those coming from the Chinese regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

Japan, South Korea and Malaysia have said they will monitor travelers from China.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases continue to skyrocket in China with a record 250 million cases over the past month, adding 9,000 deaths per day. The dramatic buildup came after the country began abandoning its zero-tolerance COVID restrictions after large public outcry. .
