China plans years of “COVID zero” strategy with testing in each and every corner

After a fatal lockdown in Shanghai and serious restrictions in Beijing to prevent the spread of COVID-19, China is doubling its mass in a move that dashes hopes of moving away from its costly “COVID zero” strategy.

A network of tens of thousands of laboratory verification booths is being installed in the country’s largest and most economically important cities, with the goal of having citizens within a 15-minute walk from a sampling point. The infrastructure will allow cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen’s tech hub and Hangzhou’s e-commerce heartland to require checks every 48 hours, with negative effects needed to get on the subway or enter a store.
