China announced on Friday the easing of some of its strict COVID-19 restrictions after the government vowed to stick to a zero-tolerance technique despite mounting economic damage.
The country is the latest primary economy linked to a strategy to eliminate virus outbreaks as they occur, through a combination of instant lockdowns, mass and prolonged quarantines.
Top executives pledged to adhere “unwaveringly” to the policy, which has forced business closures, disrupted foreign networks and weighed heavily on growth.
But an opinion from the country’s disease firm said Friday that the Politburo Standing Committee, China’s most sensible force, met on Thursday to approve limited relaxations.
According to the advisory, quarantines for incoming travelers will be reduced from 10 days to eight, with days in a state isolation medium and 3 days at home.
New arrivals will still have to go through six nucleic acid tests and will not be able to go outdoors freely for eight days, the statement said.
It adds that travelers will need to show a negative COVID check within 48 hours of boarding flights to China, a relief from the two existing checks.
The new regulations designate “significant commercial personnel” and “sports teams” as examples of privileged teams that are allowed to skip quarantine as long as they remain in a virus-protected “closed loop” for the duration of their stay.
He added that the so-called “circuit breaker” mechanism on incoming flights would be abolished, ending a policy that saw the abrupt closure of flight routes if a certain proportion of passengers were tested for the virus.
In other symptoms of appeasement, the notice removed the requirement to identify and isolate “secondary close contacts,” those who may have been in contact with others who have recently passed near other inflamed people.
A national virus threat formula has been reduced from 3 degrees to two, with spaces to label as “high threat” and subject to restrictions, or as “low threat” with minimal restrictions.
People traveling from high-risk to low-risk spaces will have to spend seven days of home isolation, of staying in centralized facilities.
Places will be explained as “low risk” if they do not register new infections for consecutive days.
Workers in settings where exposure to the virus is greatest, such as cabin crew, airport and quarantine hotel, will go through shorter quarantines, the advisory says.
On Thursday, Chinese state media reported that most sensible leaders had said they would deviate from the 0 COVID policy, echoing a vote last week to stick “firmly” to the strategy.
