China detects coronavirus in shrimp containers imported from Saudi Arabia

Dubai: The city of Lanzhou in western China said it had detected coronavirus in the packaging of a batch of shrimp imported from Saudi Arabia, while China was stepping up testing on frozen foods, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Jarida reported.

The Lanzhou Municipal Health Commission said on its online page that it had discovered a positive pattern on Friday in the internal packaging of frozen shrimp imported from Saudi Arabia that had cleared customs in the coastal city of Tianjin.

The Lanzhou bloodless garage plant where the case was discovered was temporarily closed, all plant workers were examined, all affected food was sealed and the location of all food sold was determined, he said.

The commission said the shrimp had passed through Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products Co Ltd, entered the country on 21 October and arrived in Lanzhou on 8 November.

The pattern in Lanzhou follows the detection of the virus in the packaging of a batch of Brazilian meat in Wuhan on Friday, and in Argentine meat patterns in Shandong and Jiangsu provinces this week.

The World Health Organization says the threat of getting COVID-19 from frozen foods is low, but China has sounded alarms after detecting the virus in imported food products, leading to disruptive import bans.
