Chilean police are stepping up security by Friday’s first anniversary of primary protests against the country’s conservative government, which has left more than 30 people dead.
Authorities plan to bring in 40,000 policemen on Friday to keep the peace, El Mercurio newspaper reported Tuesday, bringing up police general Ricardo Yáñez.
Chile has been shaken by days of violent protests since last October that paralyzed the capital, Santiago.
Protests began after a planned increase in public transport fares.
People who took to the streets each and every October and November last year also called for greater access to care and physical education, as well as the abandonment of the neoliberal economic system. More than 30 other people have died in the protests.
Chilean police have been criticized for their brutal behavior. According to the National Institute of Human Rights, 460 protesters were wounded in the eyes during protests because police allegedly selectively fired rubber bullets in the face.
Two went blind and another 35 lost one eye. ” We’ve learned a lot of lessons,” said Police General Yáñez, noting that more than 7,000 officials have been trained in human rights issues and fashionable police tactics.
Protests have resumed recently. On October 25, Chileans will vote if they need or need a new letter, one of the main demands of the protesters last year.
The 1980s existing one dates back to the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.
